Obama extended by a year sanctions against Iran

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 11, ARMENPRESS. The effect of US sanctions on Iran renewed for one year. About this in its notification to Congress, said President Barack Obama. «State of emergency» in relations with that country was declared over 30 years ago. “Armenpress” informs about the aforesaid, citing news-4-u website.

This notice will be published in the so-called Federal register — the collection of official documents of the government of the United States, said TASS. In the document, Obama stated that decided to leave «in the power of the Executive decree number 12170 of November 14, 1979, which declared a state of emergency due to the exceptional threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the USA created the situation in Iran.» On 4 November 1979 at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran were taken hostage 66 people.

In support of the renewal of the sanctions regime, Obama pointed out that «relations with Iran have not yet normalized,» and «the process of implementing (bilateral) agreements dated January 19, 1981, is still underway». This is the so-called Algerian agreements between the US and Iran that led to the release of American diplomats, spent more than a year in Tehran as hostages after the Islamic revolution of 1979. In these documents, in particular, the agreed principle of non-interference of countries in the internal Affairs of each other.

These restrictions are not included in the package of sanctions, which the U.S. pledged to remove after the Tehran all points of the Joint comprehensive plan of action (SITD), concluded on 14 July in Vienna between Iran and the «six» of international mediators and describing the future of the Iranian nuclear program. Obama in his statements clearly delineates the so-called «nuclear sanctions» and others, the removal of which does not depend on the achieved in Austria agreements.

November 14, 1979, 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter signed a decree number 12170 in response to the seizure of American hostages in Tehran. The U.S. Treasury Department was instructed to block all official Iranian assets in the United States, including accounts at U.S. banks and their foreign branches and offices. April 7, 1980, Carter severed diplomatic relations with Tehran and banned the export from the U.S. to Iran. Then we imposed the embargo on the import of any goods from Iran to the U.S., travel by Americans to Iran.
