From foggy Albion to Armenia: British Katherine Hodgson is fascinated with “Narek”

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 13, ARMENPRESS. Katherine Hodgson, holder of a master’s degree of the University of Cambridge, PhD student of the National Institute of Oriental Language and Civilization of Paris has been living and working in Armenia for over 2 years studying the Armenian dialects. Katherine’s PhD research topic is “Armenian Dialects”.

It did not took Katherine long to get accustomed to Armenia. She does not recall whether she faced any difficulties during the period or there were regular difficulties she does not even want to refer to.

“Everything is great for me in Armenia. I enjoy Armenian cuisine, especially khash and dolma, I even tried to make dolma two times like the Armenian women do, I also made pickles. I have been in many places in Armenia to study the dialects, I especially enjoyed being in Gyumri, Yeghegnadzor, Shnogh. These places, in particular, with their colour and character are completely different,” says Katherine in pure Armenian adding that she considers Masis and Saint Gregory of Narek as symbols of Armenia.

“When I first came in Armenia, I got off the plane and noted the summit of the mountain covered by the pink of sunrise. Later I found out it was Ararat: I am fascinated, I have never seen anything like that. And in regard to “Narek” I can say that I have personally felt its power. I had been told about “Narek” earlier. When I read it for the first time, I felt nothing. But when I read it again this year, the result was incredible and now I know “Narek” is strength,” Katherine Hodgson said, adding that she is also determined to learn grabar (Classical Armenian).
