Angela Merkel will visit Turkey
YEREVAN, OCTOBER 12, ARMENPRESS. German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Turkey on October 18 for talks on security issues, refugees and the conflict in Syria, her spokesman Steffen Seibert said on Monday.
“Armenpress” reports referring to Daily Sabah that the visit was announced two days after the twin suicide bombing in Ankara which killed at least 97 people.
Merkel is looking to seek Turkey's help in stemming the flow of refugees to Europe from the Middle East. EU leaders agree that a common approach between Turkey and Europe is needed in order to solve the refugee crisis. The leaders are on the same page regarding finding a common approach to help Turkey in dealing with the refugee crisis.
Accordingly, the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council President Donald Tusk met with President Erdoğan in Brussels on October 4-6, during which both sides discussed on what kind of an agreement was needed to arrive at a solution.
Turkey has been singled out as a key country to help solve the crisis, as it is a main source of Syrians trying to reach Europe. It is highly affected by the refugee crisis and the events in Syria.
