Turcologist Ruben Safrastyan forecasts escalation of tension between Russia and Turkey

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 7, ARMENPRESS. According to director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences, Ruben Safrastyan, tense relations between Turkey and Russia in terms of Syria was expected as they had always been opponents in geopolitical sense both in the Middle East and South Caucasus.

“Armenpress” reports that turcologist Ruben Safrastyan emphasized during his interview with “Armenpress” that the appearance of the Russian air force in Syria made impossible the most cherished wish of Turkey’s leader, i.e. creating bridgehead in the territory of Syria to fight Assad.

“All of this escalates tension in Syria. Turkey’s cherished dream has always been to occupy Syrian territory and thus create a so-called security zone which will serve Turkey as a bridgehead to fight Assad in the future. Now once the Russian air force is in Syria sky, the plan becomes impossible which will cause Turkey’s anger toward Russia,” turcologist said.

“Pre-election struggle will further escalate the situation in Turkey. Turkey’s authorities strike the Kurdistan Workers' Party which answers back if possible. In this context tension is inevitable and in these circumstances the escalation of Russian-Turkish relations worsens the situation even more. The latter is the result of Erdoğan’s adventurous policy. He has 2 dreams: to become a president without any limitations in Turkey comparable to a sultan and make Turkey a leading country in the Middle East. The mentioned 2 dreams are impracticable as Turkey does not possess the necessary potential of being a leader outside its borders and Erdoğan’s  political party does not have the required support within the country, which proves that  Erdoğan could also fail in domestic affairs,” Safrastyan said, adding that problems in the domestic affairs influence the external ones.
