Republic of Armenia marks 24th anniversary of independence

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 21, ARMENPRESS. Armenia is marking today the 24th anniversary of its independence. The Armenian people said a resolute “yes” to independence by means of a referendum 24 years ago. The majority of the Armenian population of age answered positively to the question “Do you agree that the Republic of Armenia becomes a democratic independent state outside the USSR?”. Two days later, September 23 the Supreme Council of Armenia declared it an independent, autonomous state.

Before that the declaration of Independence was adopted at the session of the Supreme Council of Armenia on August 23, 1990. Under this document Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic was renamed the Republic of Armenia. Under the decree of Armenia's Supreme Council a referendum on secession from the USSR and the establishment of independent statehood was held on September 21, 1990. A total of 94.99% of the citizens voted "for" independence.

Two days later, the Supreme Council declared Armenia an independent, autonomous state.
