ICRC calls for more efforts to record information about missing in action

YEREVAN, AUGUST 29, ARMENPRESS. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) urges governments and representatives of civil society to make more efforts to record information about missing in action during conflicts or other circumstances.  “Armenpress” reports that ICRC made such a statement on the International Day of Missing in Action.

“It is extremely important to gather all available information about missing in action (for example, when and under what circumstances the person missed) in order to give answers to the family in the future”, mentioned an ICRC official. The latter mentioned that the procedure takes a long time and sometimes it is impossible under the conditions of continues conflict. It is possible that some families never get a firm answer.

“Often, especially during conflicts, the issue of missing in action is overlooked. The governments and the other important players must guarantee this problem to remain on the agenda constantly, and do more by taking care of the families materially and psychologically”, added the ICRC official.

According to the ICRC data, the number of missing in action caused by the Karabakh conflict is over 4500, 400 out of which are registered in Armenia. ICRC assists the governments to find out the fate of the missing in action and supports their families in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Nagorno Karabakh.
