Expert of Georgian studies: It is beneficial for Georgia and Iran that the gas is transferred from
Iran to Georgia through Armenia

YEREVAN, AUGUST 22, ARMENPRESS. Gubaz Sanikidze, the head of the Iran-Georgia Parliamentary Friendship Group revealed certain details on the preliminary engagements made during his visit to Iran. Sanikidze referred to the project transferring gas from Iran to Georgia and then to Europe emphasizing that if the project were brought to life, new guarantees for the solution of Georgia’s economic and security problems would be created. Armenpress reports, that expert of Georgian studies Alik Eroyants posted about the aforementioned on his Facebook page.

He writes that the Georgian official notes that it has not been decided yet whether Iran-Georgia gas pipeline will pass through Armenia, Turkey or Azerbaijan but one thing is clear: from the point of view of security it is beneficial both for Iran and Georgia that the pipeline passes through Armenia.

“First of all the relations between Iran - Azerbaijan and Iran-Turkey are not at a good level; the trust level between the sides is really low. So Iran cannot risk secure exploitation of the pipeline in the future.”

As regards Georgia, it is beneficial for the latter that the gas is transferred from Iran to Georgia through Armenia because not only the Armenian-Georgian relations are at a high level and the two parties successfully cooperate in various spheres, but by this decision Tbilisi can implement an alternative option and counterbalance the existing Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline as well as gas transferring project “Shah Deniz 2” which will be exploited in several years.” ,writes the expert.
