Armenian archeologists - not far from making new scientific discoveries

YEREVAN, AUGUST 22, ARMENPRESS. Armenian archeologists perform excavations with foreign colleagues in various areas of Armenia trying to make new discoveries about the ancestors of the Bronze Age and the ancient societies of the Western Asia, about the times of the creation of civilizations. “Armenpress” reports that the Director of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography Pavel Avetisyan introduced present achievements of Armenian archaeology and the on-going excavations. “This cultural phenomena is not met outside the Armenian Highlands: these are exceptional Bronze Age samples and their study not only interests us but is a topic to be included in international projects. Our German colleagues are also engaged in the studies of this cultural phenomena and in the near future we will have a big book about the results of these studies: the place, role, essence, dating of these objects.” informed Pavel Avetisyan.

According to the archeologist there are no clear evaluations of vishapakars ("serpent-stones", "dragon stone’’) and the neighboring tombs, tomb-like structures as till now they have not been excavated, removed and measured. They even haven’t been registered.

“If we are able to compile all of it, we will most probably be able to open a new page in our knowledge about the system of conceptions of our Bronze Age ancestors.” highlighted Avetisyan. In reference to the ambush-hunting places, snares discovered at the foot of mount Aragats, Pavel Avetisyan noted that the latter could mainly be found in the territories of Syria, Palestine and the Sinai Peninsula.

Pavel Avetisyan highlighted that with their studies they try to transfer important scientific information about different periods of the history of humanity and the humans. According to him, excavations are being carried out in different ancient sites and monuments of Armenia.

Avetisyan also notes that the Government has allocated serious sums for field researches since 2007 but alongside with it, the material subject to studies also has increased and the conditions of the institute have not been improved . The institute does not lack committed specialists and one third of the employees working there are young people not older than 30.
