St. Minas Church in Tbilisi - under collapse danger

St. Minas Church in Tbilisi - under collapse danger

TBILISI, AUGUST 5, ARMENPRESS. St. Minas Church in Tbilisi which has been struggling without a rooftop for a year is under the danger of collapse. The Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church in Georgia is concerned with the matter.

According to the Diocese, the walls of the church are very weak and the idea of church’s collapse is not excluded. In a conversation with "Armenpress", Susanna Khachatryan, Head of the Press Service of the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church in Georgia, informed that the church had always been in the center of the Diocese’s attention. However, the Diocese could not take care for the church as it was in the list of 5 disputed churches composed by the Georgian Church.

“The rooftop of the church collapsed last year because it had not been repaired for years and the base and the roof were not fastened. Some representatives came from the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia promising that the state government of Georgia would provide money for its reconstruction. A year has passed and there is no change referring its reconstruction. The Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church in Georgia has sent numerous letters to government officials presenting the condition of the church, but there’s no change.”, Susanna  Khachatryan said, adding, that instead of repairing the collapsed roof, the municipality completely removed the church’s roof; and today the walls of the church without a roof, are loosening. Rain, wind and snow exacerbate the situation.

“St. Minas Church is not disputable for us. It is an Armenian church and it must be returned to the Diocese. Both the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church in Georgia and the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin turned to the Georgian Apostolic Autocephalous Orthodox Church with the request of returning the church to the Diocese which would take care of the church.”, said Susanna Khachatryan.

The Armenian Yerevantsots St. Minas Church is located in Avlabari region not far from the Ejmiatsin Church. It was built in 1790. The church was deprived of its dome and was used as a work-room during the Soviet times. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Yerevantsots St. Minas Church was enlisted as a disputable church.
