One killed and several injured when festival tent crashes down

YEREVAN, AUGUST 3, ARMENPRESS. One man was killed and 20 other people were injured when a large tent was blown into the air, then crashed down to the ground and on top of its occupants Sunday afternoon at the Prairie Fest in Wood Dale. Armenpress reports, citing the Daily Herald that a powerful storm with high winds and hail swept through the area at about 2:35 p.m., said Wood Dale Deputy Police Chief Mike Rivas.

Police identified the man killed as 35-year-old Steven Nincic of Wood Dale. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, said DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Nincic family," Wood Dale police said in a Facebook post Sunday.

Three others were seriously injured and 17 to 20 others suffered minor injuries, he said. All were taken to various hospitals. The tent hosted the live music performances that are a centerpiece of the four-day festival. The fest was held in a new location this year, moving to the grounds of Wood Dale Junior High School, 655 N. Wood Dale Road.

Witnesses Bella Salgado, 11, and her brother, Jullian Feliciano, 12, had just gotten off a carnival ride at the festival when they saw the storm approaching and sought cover. The Wood Dale residents said they saw the tent rise and then fall back to the ground. Strong winds also knocked over a barricade.

"Everybody started screaming, and we saw people falling," Bella said. "It was really, really scary."

Their mother, Jen Salgado, said she was not at the festival but strangers stepped up and protected her kids when the storm hit and chaos ensued.

"I'm very proud of the Wood Dale community," she said.

The remainder of annual four-day festival, which was scheduled to conclude Sunday night with musical performances, was canceled.

"Nothing like this has happened to us in all the years we've had this fest," Rivas said.

Former Wood Dale resident Charlie Hartmann, who now lives in Schaumburg, was running late to meet up with friends at the festival when he came upon the scene Sunday.

"Everyone knows everyone here. It's kind of like a big reunion," he said of the festival. "For everyone in the community, this is going to hurt."
