US to help to maintain ceasefire in Karabakh

WASHINGTON, AUGUST 1, ARMENPRESS. The USA is interested in preserving peace in the conflict zone of Karabakh and is ready to support by providing relevant deterrence mechanisms. The first Deputy Defense Minister of the Republic of Armenia Davit Tonoyan told the “Voice of America” after the meetings held in Washington that strengthening the cease-fire maintenance measures in the conflict zone of Karabakh was discussed during the meetings with the representatives of Defense and Foreign Ministries of the USA. “During discussions in both Pentagon and Department of State there is a joint viewpoint that it is necessary to strengthen all kinds of measures which can be deterrent from the viewpoint of military actions”.

Davit Tonoyan mentioned that giving international observers a mandate to conduct investigations of border incidents can be considered as a possible deterrence measure, which will give an opportunity to prevent ceasefire violations, punish the guilty and may be even establish an atmosphere of trust between the sides. Installation of detection and deterrence systems on the contact line of the armies under the umbrella of observers can be another measure, which will give an opportunity to address any case of ceasefire violation. "It is a very serious deterrence measure, very serious, before doing something they will think should they do it or no”, “Armenpress” reports that Tonoyan mentioned.
