Song “Happy Birthday to You” probably to get free of copyright protection

YEREVAN, JULY 29, ARMENPRESS. The famous song “Happy Birthday to You” has been free of copyright protection since 1922. As “Armenpress” reports, citing “Ria Novosti” agency, however the holder of the song’s copyright “Warner Music Group” collects nearly $2 million a year in licensing fees for its use in films, television shows and other productions.
The lawyers of famous American filmmaker Jennifer Nelson have discovered new evidence that “Happy Birthday to You” has been free of copyright protection since 1922.
The filmmaker filed a lawsuit in 2013 against the holder of the song’s copyright after paying $1,500 to be allowed to use the song in her documentary movie, which was titled “Happy Birthday”.
