Temporary exhibition “Armenian sport and Gymnastics in Ottoman Empire” to be opened 
at Genocide museum

YEREVAN, JULY 29, ARMENPRESS. The presentation of Hayk Demoyan’s monograph “Armenian sport and Gymnastics in Ottoman Empire” and the opening of the homonymous exhibition will take place at the hall of temporary exhibitions of the Armenian Genocide Museum. The event will take place on August 4.

As “Armenpress” was informed from the department of the public relations of the Armenian-Genocide Museum-Institute, this edition is the amended version of the homonymous edition of 2009. For the first time the background of the Armenian sport and gymnastics  in the Ottoman Empire are combined and presented in the book, the development of sport in the Western Armenia and the activities of the first Armenian sport clubs. The edition full of photos presents the reader very interesting episodes that have been unknown till now.

The honorable guests of the event will be the descendants of famous athletes and scouts Grigor Chologhyan, Shavarsh Krisyan, Vahan Cheraz.

The history of Armenian sport in the Ottoman Empire starts from the 19th century when the first sport clubs were established. Prior to the Word War I nearly 40 sport clubs operated only in Constantinople.

Many sportsmen became the victims of the 1915-1920 genocide. Most of the Armenian sport clubs ceased to operate.
