Those who still deny Armenian Genocide place themselves on side of those who were responsible for it: Peter De Roover

YEREVAN, JULY 24, ARMENPRESS. MP Peter De Roover, member of “New Flemish Alliance“(N-VA)  party and the author of the resolution on the Armenian Genocide adopted by the Belgian Chamber of Representatives, finds that the Armenian-Turkish reconciliation is possible only in case of Turkey’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire in 1915.

Armenpress informs that the aforenamed is mentioned in the speech of the MP in the Belgian Chamber of Representatives, during which he specified the aim and the mission of the document recognizing the Armenian Genocide.
Peter De Roover said:
“These kind of tragedies grow into a collective trauma for a whole people or population and can drag over generation after generation if there are no steps taken towards reconciliation. And this is exactly what we are talking about today: reconciliation. This can only happen if the Turkish government, without any haze, acknowledges that since 1915  a genocide on the Armenian people took place in the former Ottoman empire. Many Turks already did this and some even spend time in prison because of it. But the evolution in the civic debate in Turkey cannot be undone. The taboo that lies on the ‘G-word’ can no longer withstand the pressure of the facts. However, no official Turkish acknowledgement has been expressed. This resolution is therefore a clear call from our representatives to Turkey to finally take the necessary steps towards reconciliation. We do not want to point any fingers towards people or institutions because they are Turkish. No one can be deemed responsible simply because of where he/she was born. We also make this very clear in our resolution. But let there be no misunderstanding. Those who still deny or even justify the Armenian genocide place themselves on the side of those who were responsible and take over, because of what is said or withheld, a moral responsibility.”
“Our resolution can only be read and understood in this spirit.”, stressed the MP.
Peter De Roover highlighted that though the resolution is specifically about the Armenian genocide, but there are other nations who were victims of the Genocide committed at the beginning of the 20th century in the Ottoman Empire.
124 members of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives voted for the resolution of the Armenian Genocide and 8 of them remained neutral on July 23.
