Armenian and Arameans organizations of Belgium concerned over some points of Armenian Genocide recognition resolution

Armenian and Arameans organizations of Belgium concerned over some points of Armenian
Genocide recognition resolution

BRUSSELS, JULY 16, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian and Aramean communities of Belgium expressed their deep concern over the wording in a draft resolution on the acknowledgement of the Armenian Genocide by Belgium. The Committee of Belgian Armenians, Committee of Hay Tad, and the Aramean Federation of Belgium have criticize the ambiguity of the text. As “Armenpress” informs, citing “Asbarez” periodic, the organizations are particularly concerned over the 2nd and 9th points of the resolution.

The 2nd point asks the Federal Government of Belgium “to accept that modern Turkey cannot bear moral and historical responsibility for the Armenian tragedy during the Ottoman Empire”, and the 9th point supports the initiatives of NGOS in Turkey and Armenia which are aimed to reconcile the two countries. Armenian and Aramean organizations called the 2nd point “failed”, mentioning that more and more intellectuals and Turkish civil society members today speak for truth and struggle for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. “As a contradiction, the Turkish authorities rely on denial, continuing to refute the evidences of the Armenian and Aramean genocides and glorifying their organizers. Thus, they become the successors of the acts done in the Ottoman Empire. Official Turkey has at least moral responsibility”, is mentioned in the statement of the organizations.

Referring to the 9th point, the authors of the statement highlight the importance of rapprochement between Armenian and Aramean associations with Turkish associations in Belgium that have recognized the Armenian Genocide in order to start a dialogue.

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives adopted the Armenian Genocide recognition resolution on July 7. The adopted resolution had been submitted by the ruling coalition. Drafts of the resolution had been submitted also by opposition parties which did not pass.
