YEREVAN, 29 MAY, ARMENPRESS. To liberate and renovate the Saint Karapet Armenian Monastery of Mush and the adjacent homes, the Cultural Union of the Armenians of Sasun for Social Assistance and Solidarityhas launched a new initiative. As “Armenpress” reports, citing Haberler.com,President of the Union Aziz Dağcı has addressed the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Internal Affairs with the demand to clear the area of the Armenian monastery of pantries, stables and the homes built there.

Dağcı mentioned that the fact that there are homes and people in the church belonging to the Armenian community is desecrating those sites. The President of the Union of Armenians of Sasun emphasized that Turkey was violating the points of the Treaty of Lausanne that it signed and by which the Turkish government is committed to protect the churches, tombs and other religious structures belonging to ethnic minorities. Nevertheless, Turkish officials violate that provision and have allowed people to live in that area, as well as use the Armenian monastery as a pantry. Dağcı informed that he was waiting for answers from the Turkish ministries, after which he plans on starting the renovation of the Saint Karapet Monastery of Mush.
