Solemn ceremony for novice students from Armenia admitted to United World Colleges
held at UWC Dilijan College

YEREVAN, MAY 25, ARMENPRESS: A solemn ceremony orchestrated at UWC Dilijan College on May 24 welcomed the 21 young students from Armenia who were named winners as a result of the contest for UWC admission and who will start studying at one of eight United World Colleges from August 2015, Armenpress reports, citing the press service of the IDeA Foundation.
UWC Dilijan College Co-Founders Ruben Vardanyan and Veronika Zonabend, heads of UWC Dilijan College and UWC Armenian National Committee, Armenian UWC graduates as well as the novice students and their parents attended the event.
Presenting the admission results and process, UWC Armenian National Committee Coordinator Daria Brodnikovskaya said that this year the competition was really tough. Around 170 applications were submitted and after the three selection stages 21 students from Yerevan, Dilijan, Sisian, Masis, Gyumri and Artsakh got the chance to pursue their education at one of United World Colleges. Out of them, 10 will study at UWC Dilijan College and the rest at UWC Colleges in Italy, Germany, U.S., Canada, India, Singapore and the Netherlands.
All 21 students will be granted scholarships with the support of philanthropists Ruben Vardanyan and Veronika Zonabend, President of RD Group Gagik Adibekyan and Ameria Group.
Congratulating and wishing success to the future students, Ruben Vardanyan noted that the ceremony for novice students is gradually becoming a traditional event. He also stressed that they are not only the bearers of the Armenian culture and traditions, but are also the ones transmitting them.
“2015 is a very responsible year as it marked the centenary of the Armenian Genocide. We remember what happened 100 years ago but the only way to respond is to be strong and successful. You are bright young people and I have no doubt that you will achieve success and with dignity will represent Armenians and Armenia irrespective of where you go,” he noted.
Ruben Vardanyan expressed gratitude to the present philanthropists with the help of which not only Armenian but also non-Armenian students were given scholarships. “I am immensely happy that there are people sharing my dreams, and we commit joint efforts to implement the projects,” he added.
Chair of the Board of Governors of UWC Dilijan College Veronika Zonabend noted that this day grants the young students an opportunity to start a new life. “All this was possible owing to the efforts, practice, knowledge and love of a number of people. The selection process was not a common one – it was not just a knowledge assessment test, but a unique practice that you acquired. What matters is that everything is done with love and people involved in it also have faith in what they do,” noted Veronika Zonabend.
She also handed over acknowledgement letters to people involved in the student selection process.
The future students received gifts from UWC Armenian National Committee. Head of the College John Puddefoot also welcomed them and said: “I would like to turn to the parents. Don’t expect your children to return home the same people they were. They will be more mature, stronger, smarter and more experienced.”
The opening of commemorative plaques placed in the College territory was also held during the event. They express gratitude to philanthropists Arman Voskerchyan and Kristine Ter-Kazaryan for providing the medical center of the College with medical equipment and to Ziyavudin Magomedov’s PERI Charitable Foundation for the construction of the tennis court in the territory of UWC Dilijan.
