Museums should educate visitor. Marine Haroyan

YEREVAN, 16 MAY, ARMENPRESS. The Head of Armenia's National Committee of International Council of Museums (ICOM) Marine Haroyan, who is also a researcher at the Charents Museum of Literature and Art, has banned saying rudely to the children "cannot" and supports the creation and dissemination of educational programs at the museums. She has not yet met a curator of contemporary art in Armenia and believes that the victory of the Armenian pavilion at the Venice Biennale will be fruitful for the Armenian artists.

"Armenpress" interviewed with Marine Haroyan about this and other topics ahead of the "Museums’ Night" and the subsequent International Museum Day, which runs as follows;

- From the first day of its establishment of (ICOM) in Armenia, You were engaged in that work. During the last years, what did the presence of Armenia’s organization give to our museums?

- Firstly, we entered the international arena. We put purposes before us, so that the museums of the world recognize Armenia as a country that has a very rich cultural heritage. For the past eight years, over 20 young scientists and experts of museum participated in the international conferences and seminars, which were aimed to encourage them in that sector. Also, as a result of the works of the eight years, we have already 3 young people, who are members of ICOM's international committees. As a result of which, there are educational programs in the Armenian museums, which are the initiatives of our young members. For instance, George Orbelyan, the Deputy Director of Armenia’s Museum of the History is one of young professionals of ICOM, who are already an international expert and he is invited to conduct seminars.

- You mentioned the education programs in the museums. What work is being done to create that culture in Armenia?

- We are developing with "Dvv International" organization education programs for the museums, because not all museums are prepared in accordance with the categories. On that purpose, this autumn, a Guidance Manual will be published dedicated to the museum's educational programs.

-  Can You call the majority of the Armenian people as fond of museums?

- I'm sorry, but no. And this problem cannot be solved without spending money. The museums should educate visitors, but they cannot bring the children from school to museum, because of the ban of fundraising in the schools. In that sense, the Literature and Art Museum wants to sign a memorandum with the Ministry of Education in order to resolve the technical issues related to bring the children to the museum. Those issues have been resolved, for which it is necessary the relevant authorities coordinated work, and they have already found a solution to that problem in worldwide.

In fact, we need museum educators and museum managers, so that the museum not to become a tedious place for the children, but the preparing process of such specialists still fails in our education system. (FULL VERVION OF INTERVIEW IS AVAILABLE IN ARMENIAN)
