Armenian Genocide commemoration at Kerkyra Island of Greece

YEREVAN, 6 MAY, ARMENPRESS. On May 2, friends of the Albert Cohen Memorial Foundation organized an event dedicated to the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide at the Saint Michael and Saint George Palace on Kerkyra Island of Greece. The title of the event was “Kerkyra Remembers the Armenians and the Armenian Orphans 100 Years Later”.

As the Department of Press, Information and Public Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia reports to “Armenpress”, the event began with a performance of the Greek and Armenian national anthems by the philharmonic orchestra. The organizers gave opening remarks in which they mentioned that the event was in line with the ideas and values that writer, diplomat and humanist Albert Cohen believed in.

In his welcome speech, Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Greece Gagik Ghalachyan expressed gratitude and mentioned that thousands of Armenian orphans were saved and had the chance to start new lives at the orphanages of Kerkyra during and after the Armenian Genocide.

The event included performances of Komitas’s songs by singer Galina Knish and pianist Anastasia Lopatina. An exhibition of photos and items of the Armenian families of Kerkyra opened at the Art Café Exhibition Gallery and will run until May 15th.
