Condemnation is best way of preventing genocides: Armenia’s President

YEREVAN, APRIL 28, ARMENPRESS. The President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan gave an interview to Russian First TV’s “Pozner” program, where he reflected on the necessity of recognizing and condemning the genocides for the prevention of new crimes in future. “Any undiscovered and un-condemned crime serves as an impetus for the future crimes,” Serzh Sargsyan said.

As reports “Armenpress”, the President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan particularly underscored: “In my opinion, the best warning and the strongest element of preventing the recurrence of events in future is confessing and admitting the committed crimes. It has a practical significance as well: there is a huge temptation to repeat the same action, if one was not punished for it before.”

Asked how one can understand the fact that such countries as the United States and Israel still have not recognized the Armenian Genocide, the President stated: “For them interests are more important, than values – universal values. In this case they say that they are guided by their national interests, which is expressed in the policy of not offending Turkey. 44 of the 51 of America’s states recognized the Armenian Genocide; a number of U.S. Presidents uttered the word genocide.

The current President Obama had called the events genocide as a Senator and during his campaign he accused the opponents for the lack of unambiguous standpoint on this issue. The same is in Israel’s case.”
