Only after facing own past, Turkey may pretend for EU membership: Bundestag MP

YEREVAN, 23 APRIL, ARMENPRESS: The deputy of the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union faction of the Bundestag of Germany Albert Weiler delivered a speech at the social and political global forum “Against the Crime of Genocide”, held in Yerevan, addressing his message of respect to the memory of the Armenian Genocide victims first in Armenian and then adding that what the government of the Young Turks did against the Armenians a century ago was genocide.

“They were exiled, pursued and slaughtered. There is no doubt in this issue and there is no doubt who the victim was and who the executor was. When we look back to this horrible crime, we see that the people, the government and finally the whole state, for whom they stood, took a great sin upon themselves. This is a fact, which does not allow making it invisible. And this fact will never be forgotten. The lack of clear and unequivocal confession by the Turkish government on this issue up to now upsets us and even frustrates many people. There is a lack of open attitude to the own history. There is a lack of admitting own past courageously”, - stated the deputy, adding that accepting the own past is the best way, leading to joint future.
