Tankian talks about his roots and the Armenian Genocide Centennial ceremonies

YEREVAN, 20 APRIL, ARMENPRESS. The National Public Radio has covered the rock band System of a Down’s Wake Up The Souls tour and the concert to be held in Yerevan on April 23. According to “Armenpress”, in an interview with NPR host Arun Rath, the band’s lead singer Serj Tankian talked about his roots, the memory of the Armenian people, as well as Armenia and the commemorative events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Tankian said he grew up hearing stories about the Armenian Genocide. He is part of the generation of survivors of the Armenian Genocide, and the tragedy that took place a century ago has had its impact on Tankian’s life and his music. He emphasized that the stories have had a deep impact on the four members of the rock band and they view the issue as a personal issue.

People are really, really excited. System of a Down is probably the biggest band that can play in Armenia, because not only are there musical fans there, but a lot of people have been fans of the kind of political work the band has done, or work having to do with awareness of the genocide. So we have a huge following there,” Tankian said, adding that despite the fact that the current Erdoğan government has not come close to recognizing the genocide-not just come close, but spends millions of dollars a year with K Street lobbying firms in the U.S. and many different parliaments around the world to try to spread its disinformation, Turkey will eventually recognize the Armenian Genocide.
