Red Cross collects DNA samples from relatives of missing persons

YEREVAN, 27 MARCH, ARMENPRESS. The International Committee of the Red Cross office in Armenia has initiated a project of collecting biological samples from the relatives of missing persons, who were disappeared during the conflict of Nagorno-Karabakh. “Armenpress” had a conversation on this issue with the head of the delegation of ICRC Sarah Epprecht.

The pilot phase of the project was successfully conducted in the end of the previous year. The launch of its main phase will be given in the coming weeks. “Last year we carried out a pilot phase of the program, during which we have collected the DNA samples from the family members of missing persons. It’s about taking samples from the oral cavity of the missing persons’ several relatives, as a result of recycling it could become biological sample, which will attached to the missing person's medical records. The meaning of this project is that if one day making exhumation becomes possible, the samples comparing with the results of body, the answers will be given to the families, because they have the right to be informed about their relative,” Sarah Epprecht stated.
