MEPs to visit Armenian Genocide Memorial on April 24

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 26, ARMENPRESS: Ahead of the centennial of the Armenian Genocide, different events will be held at the European Parliament, aiming at not only presenting to the wide public the first crime committed against the humanity a century ago, but also demand for recognition and compensation on legal and political grounds. The President of the Armenian National Committee of Europe Gaspar Karapetyan told Armenpress that at the moment the Committee, along with the members of the European Parliament, are developing a draft bill devoted to the centennial of the Armenian Genocide to put it to voting by April 24.

“I cannot present the details of the bill now, as we are still working on it and the final version of the text has not been yet developed. The bill is to condemn Turkey for the Genocide, committed a century ago. We want that the bill requires legal compensation as well. The bill is a call to Turkey to recognize the Armenian Genocide. There are various proposals, which we are discussing now to reach the best version. We are working mainly with large parties to have the necessary amount of votes and to be able to pass the bill in the Parliament, - said Gaspar Karapetyan, adding that back in 1987 the European Parliament adopted a bill on the Genocide and in the reports on Turkey it always raises the issue of the Armenian Genocide recognition.
Besides the adoption of the bill it is intended that the delegation of the European Parliament’s deputies will arrive in Armenia in April to commemorate the centennial of the Armenian Genocide with the Armenian people. “We have made the preliminary list of the deputies of the European Parliament, who will go to Armenia. The group will be consisted not only of the members of the European Parliament-Armenia friendship group, but also other deputies. Certainly, the chairwoman of the group, deputy chairs will be in the list, who will pay tribute to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide”, - said Gaspar Karapetyan.
