No mechanisms for protection of journalists' safety exist in Ukrainian hot sites: Oleksandr Kharchenko

No mechanisms for protection of journalists' safety exist in Ukrainian hot sites: Oleksandr
Kharchenko

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 28, ARMENPRESS: The safety and security issue of the journalists in Ukraine has become strictly topical during the recent year in Ukraine. The military actions are being covered by many journalists and it is very difficult to provide for their security. The General Director of UKRINFORM Oleksandr Kharchenko told Armenpress that as a national agency, they have made serious efforts on this issue during the last year and cooperate with law enforcement and security agencies, though have not managed to reach any serious results.

“We have established a media center, a hot line, which helps the journalists to work in hot situations. Jointly with the OSCE and Ukrainian Union of Journalists, we are implementing trainings, though the problems are not regulated. The journalists’ insurance remains a big issue. If the Western media is able to insure the safety of their journalists in hot conflict spots and during military operations, today the Ukrainian mass media, especially the state ones, cannot do such a thing. That is the reason, unfortunately, the journalists prepare their articles and reporting at the expense of their fear, life and health”, - said Kharchenko, adding that very often the photos and articles, brought from hot conflict spots, take human lives.
