Serving in Lebanon, peacemakers contribute to Armenia's security: Defense Minister

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 27, ARMENPRESS: The Armenian detachment of 32 peacemakers left for Lebanon by the aircraft of the Italian Air Forces on November 26 and has already arrived in the country to carry out peacekeeping mission in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The Department for Mass Media and Public Relations of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia informed Armenpress that the seeing-off official ceremony took place, attended by the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia Seyran Ohanyan and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy to Armenia Giovanni Ricciulli.
Seyran Ohanyan delivered a speech, stating in particular: You leave for Lebanon to contribute to the international peace and security and you will do that in a country, which faces instability for more than half a century, where formerly many nations of different religions lived and cohabitated peacefully. Now as well tens of thousands of our compatriots, the generations of those, who survived from the Genocide, live in this country, which is lying on the beach of the Mediterranean Sea.
There is another important reason to leave for Lebanon, which is neither Kosovo nor Afghanistan. Lebanon is the Near East, located in the Armenias external security interest area. Thus, you should know that serving in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, you also contribute to the external security of the Republic of Armenia.
The Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia have been participating in the international peacekeeping missions since 2004. Now Armenian peacekeepers carry out their mission in Afghanistan and Kosovo.
