John Heffern views OSCE MG as viable mediator

YEREVAN, 25 NOVEMBER, ARMENPRESS. The OSCE Minsk Group is playing the role of a viable mediator. This is what U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern announced during a one-hour discussion with the hashtag #chatwamb on Twitter. Ambassador of Latvia to Armenia Erikas Petrikas, Head of the EU Delegation Traian Hristea and a representative of the UK Embassy in Armenia also participated in the discussion. They touched upon different issues and, according to “ArmenPress”, one of the topics was related to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group in this regard.

U.S. Ambassador Heffern responded to the questions concerning the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and recalled the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs statement in relation to the recent incidents and the Co-Chairs’ call to weakening the tension. “The Co-Chairs have called on the parties to concentrate their efforts once again in the negotiations over a peaceful and lasting settlement, which is in everyone’s interests,” Heffern recalled. He also touched upon the Co-Chairs’ statement on showing moderation and avoiding operations that increase pressure on the line of contact. “The Minsk Group calls on the parties to abstain from the war rhetoric and provocative actions and support the OSCE MG format,” the Ambassador mentioned. Touching upon the efforts of the Minsk Group and the results, the Ambassador added that the parties must show political will for the conflict settlement and that the Minsk Group is simply playing the role of a viable mediator.
