Historian excludes Erdogan’s visit to Armenia

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 24, ARMENPRESS: Ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Armenpress talked to the Director of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia Ashot Melkonyan about the Armenians’ claims from Turkey, the appointment of the Armenians in different positions in Turkey and the programs of the historical society devoted to the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in 2015.
- What do you think, will Erdogan come to Armenia on April 24 2015?
- I exclude his visit to Armenia, as it would mean that Turkey recognizes the Armenian Genocide, which is impossible in case of the acting Turkish leadership. Though if Turkey sends any official, it will be an attempt by Turkey to counter the pressures of the West connected with the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and one of their ways to use new tactics. Expressing their pain on the occasion of the events of 1915 in that way, next year they can state that, for example, they are going to hold an event devoted to the memory of the Turks, killed allegedly in 1975-1982 by the Armenian terrorists, that is the representatives of our new liberation fight (the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) – author) in real and thus they will try to put as on the same pan, so we should be very careful in that issue.
