YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 10, ARMENPRESS: The President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan today visited the CANDLE Synchrotron Research Institute. The Department for Mass Media and Public Relations of the Armenian President’s Office informed Armenpress that at the AREAL linear accelerator hall, Serzh Sargsyan got acquainted with the works of the first stage of CANDLE project, AREAL, and the international cooperation programs of the Institute.

CANDLE - Center for the Advancement of Natural Discoveries using Light Emission - is a project of 3 gigaelectronvolts energy, third generation synchrotron light source for fundamental, industrial and applied research in biology, physics, chemistry, medicine, material and environmental sciences.
 
The spectrum of the light cover the region from the ultraviolet to hard X-ray region enabling the investigations at the cell, protein, virus, molecular and atomic levels. The brightness of CANDLE light exceeds the conventional X-Ray tubes by billion times. In total the facility can serve more than 40 research groups simultaneously supporting the spectroscopy, scattering, imaging and the time resolved experiments. The facility emphasized by the state-of-the-art design providing the stable operation with the beam lifetime of more than 18 hours.

It is the vision and desire of the Institute that CANDLE will be an international facility providing an opportunity for the scientists in the region and beyond to have access to a user-friendly, world-class, third generation light source.

The address of the Institute to the international scientific community is to support the project by joining the Petition proceeded by the National Academy of Science, Yerevan State University and the Armenian Physical Society.

AREAL (Advanced Research Electron Accelerator Laboratory) is the laser driven RF gun based on 20 MeV electron linear accelerator project aiming to produce small emittance ultra-short electron beam pulses for advanced experimental study in the fields of novel accelerator concepts, new coherent radiation sources and dynamics of atomic and molecular processes.

AREAL project is considered as the first phase of CANDLE synchrotron light source creation in Armenia. The basic approaches to the CANDLE project first phase implementation in accordance with the recommendations of international experts are identified as following:

The completion of the AREAL project with long term experimental program will be a scientific technological asset for the country, scientific community and the institute that will lead to the formation of a team with experienced scientists and engineers capable to design, construct and operate state-of the art accelerator facility.
