Greek Parliament to hold voting of Genocide denial criminalizing bill

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 6, ARMENPRESS: The voting of the Genocide denial criminalizing bill at the Greek Parliament will take place on September 9 at 19:00 Greece time. The Editor-In-Chief of the Greece-based Free Day periodical (Azat Or) Hripsime Harutyunyan told Armenpress that on September 5 a hot discussion was held at the Greek Parliament and tens of speeches were delivered. “The final voting is scheduled to be held on September 9 at 19:00 Greece time. We hope that no delays will be made this time and the law is adopted”, - said Harutyunyan.
It has been for a week that the Greek Parliament discusses the developed version of the bill titled “Fight against xenophobia”. The bill envisages bringing to criminal account for denial of the genocides of not only the Jews, but also Armenians and Pontus Greeks on the territory of Greece. The bill provides for big money fines and imprisonment for the people, who publicly humiliate and deny the genocides – crime against the humanity – recognized by the international courts and the Greek Parliament. In case 51 deputies of the Parliament out of 101 vote for the bill, it will be adopted. Harutyunyan stated that during the meetings with the Armenian community representatives it was found out that the majority of the Parliament is for the adoption of the law.
