Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

YEREVAN, AUGUST 22, ARMENPRESS. On August 21, the UN Security Council conducted open debate on conflict prevention, international peace, and safeguarding of security. As reports “Armenpress”, in reference to the official website of the UN, Ambassador Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), participated in and addressed at the UN Security Council open debate. In his remarks, the Armenian Ambassador stressed that Armenia especially underscores the role of civil society in the formation of a climate of mutual trust in the prevention of disputes.

“The prevention is indispensable not solely in the starting of a possible conflict, but also in the case of conflicts that have not been settled once and for all. This also refers to the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, as Azerbaijan launched a full-scale war, violating the UN Charter, against the realization of the right to self-determination of its [Karabakh’s] people,” specifically said Armenia’s Permanent Representative to UN.

In addition, Mnatsakanyan drew the attention to the Yazidis’ mass killings in Northern Iraq in recent weeks. He noted that hundreds of thousands of people—including Yazidis, Assyrians, and Armenians—are forced to leave their homes, and informed that Armenia has decided to deliver aid to the Yazidi community through UN.

“The international community must act immediately. Armenia calls on the [UN] Security Council to address forthwith to the tragic situation of the Yazidi population,” Ambassador Zohrab Mnatsakanyan concluded.

In response to the statement made by the Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, in which the representative of Baku once again accused the Armenian side, Mnatsakanyan stressed the necessity of avoiding the resumption of the conflict, urging to learn lessons from the consequences of the recent tense situation. He also emphasized the need to stay true to the cease-fire agreements, as well as apply reliable measures as soon as possible.
