Parents are proud of their daughters: campaign against selective abortions kicks off

YEREVAN, AUGUST 20, ARMENPRESS. Sex-selective abortion has become a growing issue in Armenia.  In particular, it is already several days that a "flash mob" against sex-selective abortions has kicked off on "Facebook" social network, which is joined by many parents. They post their daughters photos on the social network and express pride for their existence.

One of the initiators of the "flash mob", father of four children, Aramazd Ghalamkaryan told Armenpress that as for the sex-specific abortion issue, the problem is deeper. "Besides the fact that many female children are being deprived of life, it becomes the cause of serious health problems that many women face. Numerous death cases have been fixed," said Ghalamkaryan.

Research into the disturbing high rates of sex-selective abortion in Armenia have shown that there are three main reasons parents in Armenia abort female fetuses: first, families' and society's preference for male children; second, the tendency to have fewer children; and third, the ultrasound, which allows parents to know the sex of their child and opt for abortion.

The number of male children born in Armenia exceeds the norm. The nom is 105–106 boys for every 100 girls. There is a definite increase, and this increase is observed especially during the third and subsequent births. If this trend continues, 20–30 years later, there will be a shortage of girls in Armenia and problems in demographic terms — fewer marriages and fewer women giving birth.

A 2013 United Nations report noted that in Armenia for every 114-116 boys, only 100 girls are born. This unbalanced sex ratio will have severe consequences for the country’s demographic future. These figures are a result of familial pressures, medical fraud by doctors, false information, financial troubles, and a patriarchal society that takes the decision making process away from women.
