Azerbaijan hopes to "sell" prospect of peace in South Caucasus on higher prices: analyst

YEREVAN, JULY 31, ARMENPRESS. Political scientist Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan explains the ceasefire violation by Azerbaijan and maintaining tension on the border by the weakening role of  superpowers in South Caucasus. "It is obvious that Azerbaijan has realized that one of the two factors of maintaining peace in South Caucasus - external pressure factor is quite weak at the present moment, which is in fact does not function conditioned by Ukraine crisis and sharpening of the Russia-America conflict springing from it. As the cooperation in the region of two superpowers is in fact missing, it allows Azerbaijan to act more freely without facing any responsibility,” the Politician said.

According to Harnt Melik-Shahnazaryan, Azerbaijan seeing transformation process of zones of influence in the post-Soviet countries, keeps the situation strained, hopeful to “sell” the prospect of peace to foreign partners on higher prices. As “Armenpress” reports the political scientist said: “Whether it will be the United States or Russia, does not matter for Baku. Depending on geopolitical developments in Ukraine, it will become clear whose potential is stronger and who can aspire to a more influential role in the South Caucasus.”
