Turkish Journalist discovered that Turkey's first woman doctor was Zaruhi Kavalcıyan
YEREVAN, JULY 30, ARMENPRESS. Turkish journalist Akif Akalin, based on rich documentary materials, revealed that the first woman doctor in Turkey was Zaruhi Kavalcıyan, who received education in USA, and not as officially presented Turkish doctor Safiye Ali Krekeler (1894-1952) educated in Germany. As “Armenpress” reports, the Turkish journalist informed about this in his recent article published in Hyetert.
According to the law in 1898 in Ottoman Empire women were prohibited to get medical education. Zaruhi Kavalcıyan, who was a graduate of Boston University Medical Faculty, was the daughter of doctor Serob Kavalcıyan famous in Izmit and Adapazar cities. Zarouhi Kavalcıyan becomes Turkey's first woman doctor graduating from the University in 1903.
