Erdogan’s appeal to Armenians ahead of April 24

YEREVAN, APRIL 23, ARMENPRESS. The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan made an official statement relating to April 24, expressing his condolences to the grandchildren Armenias . As reports “Armenpress”, the  statement posted on the website of the Turkish Government, runs that April 24 which bears a special meaning for the Armenians living in Turkey and in diaspora is an opportunity “to share freely the thoughts on that problem”.

Erdogan, together with that, stresses that at the beginning of the previous century, the last years of the Ottoman Empire "was an undeniably difficult period for millions of the citizens of the Empire – be it a Turk, Kurd, Arab, Armenian or other nationality". In his opinion for understanding all the pains of that period, it should not be looked at through the prism of “religion and race root” as, according to him, there is a saying "fire burns the place, where it falls".

Erdogan considers it the duty of the mankind "to remember, understand and share the pains that  all the citizens of the Ottoman Empire had at that time, including the Armenians”, which, in his words “is a requirement of a pluralistic perspective as well as of a culture of democracy and modernity”.

Emphasizing the statement of "honoring the past, building the future together", Erdogan considers it “unacceptable” to use the events of 1915 against Turkey as a pretext and a theme for political conflict."

“The events of the World War I are our shared pain. To evaluate this painfull period of history through a perspective of just memory is a humane and scholarly responsibility” – he notes.

Erdogan makes the same statement as years before – the beaten suggestion about the necessity of establishing a joint historical commission to shed light on the events of 1915 and understand accurately the history”. In his words Turkey has opened all its archives at the “service of the researchers”.
