Family from Armenia cheated of USD 70,000 by Indian jeweler

YEREVAN, APRIL 22, ARMENPRESS. A 27-year-old tourist from Armenia and her family were cheated of US dollar 70,000 allegedly by a Jaipur-based fraudster in lieu of supplying original diamonds. The girl along with her father approached the senior officers of Jaipur police commissionerate and has lodged a case of cheating against the jeweler and four others including two of his family members.

As reports “Armenpress” citing Times of India, according to the police, victim Srbuhi and her father Matevos (59) came in contact with a local jeweler identified as Ravi Panchali.

"We were looking for some diamonds and somebody told us about him (Panchali). Till December 4, 2013 we had made a payment of US dollar 70,000 US to him. When we opened the parcels sent by Ravi which we thought were diamonds but were fake. We tried to speak to him but he never responded," said Srbuhi while talking to Times Of India at Vaishali Nagar police station.

Since December, the family tried to speak to the accused to either get their money or get genuine diamonds as promised in the deal. However, when all their attempts failed, the woman along with her father landed in Delhi on April 16 and took a bus to Jaipur to lodge a case.

"Initially we were confused as we were unaware of the proceedings. We met some officers of state police and the Jaipur police. Thus, after getting an information on how we can go about it we have lodged our complaint at Vaishali Nagar police station," Srbuhi said.

Khalil Ahmed, circle inspector, Vaishali Nagar police station said, "The victims not only included the father and the daughter but also some other family members including her uncle who had contributed the money they had paid to this cheater. In their FIR they have stated that they have lost everything. We have lodged a case of cheating against five persons including the father and mother of the accused," Ahmed said.
