Armenia’s President reacts on issue raised by Azerbaijani President

YEREVAN, MARCH 25, ARMENPRESS: The President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan has recently made a speech at Nuclear Security Summit ongoing in Hague city of the Netherlands.

The Department of Mass Media and Public Relations of the President’s staff of the Republic of Armenia informed Armenpress that at the beginning of the speech Serzh Sargsyan noted that he joins the grateful words addressed to the Netherlands to organize and hold the summit brilliantly.

The Department of Mass Media and Public Relations of the President’s staff of the Republic of Armenia informed Armenpress that Serzh Sargsyan underscored that Armenia is actively engaged in the international processes of the solution of nuclear security issues and that after the Seoul summit the country carried out steps in the direction of the agreed goals.

He also recalled that in 2013 Armenia ratified 2005 supplement of “physical protection convention of nuclear material” and the joint convention “About Safety of the spent fuel and radioactive waste management”. “We have strengthened legal instruments of nuclear material accounting and control by making amendments in the law “About secure use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes”,” the President of the Republic of Armenia said.

According to Serzh Sargsyan, technical and experimental laboratory of nuclear and radiological materials was established in Armenia by U.S. assistance in January 2013 directed to the neutralization of terrorism danger.  It significantly influenced on the improvement of Armenia’s capacities to react upon nuclear smuggling transnational threat.

 “In today’s session the President of Azerbaijan raised an issue on the security of Armenia’s Metsamor nuclear power plant. I would like to mention that we closely cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency regarding the issue of providing security to the Armenian nuclear power plant consistently carrying out requirements defined by N. 640 technical documentation,” the President of the Republic of Armenia concluded.
