English-language travel guide on Nagorno Karabakh presented in Canada

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 26, ARMENPRESS. The presentation of the third edition of the English-language travel guide titled “Armenia and Karabakh: The Stone Garden” by Matthew Karanian was held in the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia to Canada on November 23. The Press, Information, and Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia informed “Armenpress” that the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Canada Armen Yeganyan made opening remarks at the event. The Ambassador introduced the guest and highlighted the significance of the English-language comprehensive guide dedicated to Armenia and Artsakh.

‘Armenia and Karabakh: The Stone Garden Travel Guide’ is the top selling guide to Armenia! This new book was published in February 2013, and it quickly jumped to the top of the best seller lists and impressed readers and critics alike because of its comprehensive coverage and its beautiful photography.

All of the travel research is original, and when the book recommends a site, or suggests a travel route, it’s because author-photographer Matthew Karanian has actually been there and know what’s worth seeing and what’s worth avoiding.

This Third Edition is the culmination of more than a decade of research, and replaces the Second Edition of The Stone Garden Guide: Armenia and Karabagh, which was released back in 2006.

The Stone Garden Travel Guide is still the only guide book to Armenia and Karabakh that emphasizes environmental awareness and conservation as a primary focus for visitors.

The Stone Garden philosophy acknowledges that most travel is not eco-tourism, but advocates that all travelers should tread lightly, be aware of how their conduct affects the environment, and support environmentally friendly activities. This book takes a light-handed but comprehensive approach in introducing nature and conservation to a general readership.

Matthew Karanian is an attorney, and he practices law in Pasadena. He researched and wrote ARMENIA AND KARABAKH: THE STONE GARDEN TRAVEL GUIDE. He also created many of the book's photographs, along with co-photographer Robert Kurkjian.

Matthew was born and raised in Connecticut. He first traveled to Armenia in 1995, to work at the American University of Armenia (AUA). He later served as Associate Dean of the law program at AUA, and as Director of the university's Legal Research Center. He and his law students founded Armenia's first English-language law journal, the Armenian Law Review. Matthew has also served on the editorial board of the Armenian International Magazine (AIM).

As a legal scholar, Matthew served as a Caucasus specialist in the Republic of Georgia with the Institute for the Study of International Migration, a Georgetown University research center. He is a co-author of a scholarly treatise about the internally displaced people of Georgia, published by Lexington Books. Matthew graduated with honors from both Georgetown University Law Center and from McGeorge School of Law, and he has studied law at the Inns of Court in London, and at the University of Salzburg, in Austria.

ARMENIA AND KARABAKH: THE STONE GARDEN TRAVEL GUIDE is the fifth book that Matthew has published about Armenia. The book is dedicated to his parents, Henry and Agnes Karanian, both of whom are the children of genocide survivors.
