USA to continue cooperation with Armenia on Euro-Atlantic integration

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 15, ARMENPRESS: The United States will continue broad engagement with Armenia on Euro-Atlantic integration, including in the economic sphere. Armenpress reports, quoting the official website of the US Department of State, that the Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland stated about it at the Subcommittee on European Affairs of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on November 14. “On September 3, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan announced that Armenia would join the Eurasian Customs Union of Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus, which is incompatible with signing an Association Agreement and a DCFTA. However, both the EU and Armenia remain committed to pursuing a deeper relationship, and they are examining ways to continue this partnership. The United States will also continue broad engagement with Armenia on Euro-Atlantic integration, including in the economic sphere”, - noted Victoria Nuland.
Nuland also encouraged Moscow to abide by its commitments in the OSCE and elsewhere regarding sovereign neighbors’ rights to pursue any political and economic arrangements they choose. “We have also encouraged Moscow to see the benefits of deeper integration between its neighbors’ economies and the EU’s 500 million consumers, as well as the significant prospects for economic reform and sustainable growth that integration will bring to these countries. For one thing, more prosperous neighbors will buy more Russian exports. Both the EU and the United States are interested in increasing trade with Russia, and we are open to further consultations on what might be possible”, - the Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland stated.

In the result of the negotiations on September 3, 2013 in Moscow the Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin confirmed the aim of the Republic of Armenia and the Russian Federation in the direction of further development of economic integration processes in the Eurasian territory. In that context the President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan announced about the Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union and the necessity of implementation corresponding steps for that aim and in future about participating in formation of the Eurasian economic union. The President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin expressed his support to the abovementioned decision of Armenia and informed about the readiness of the Russian side to support the process. Serzh Sargsyan noted that this decision is not refusal from dialogue with European organizations.
Earlier it was intended that Yerevan will sign the Association and Free Trade Zone Agreement with the European Union in Vilnius. The Eastern Partnership summit will be held on November 28-29 in Vilnius, during which the signing (or pre-signing) of the Association Agreement with some Eastern Partnership countries is expected.
